The American Goldfinch is always a welcome sight. One of the bird species that spends its time here year round. They breed late in the season, so they are able to feed their young on the seeds that ripen at that time. They love thistle seed and perch themselves on those spiky plants while eating. In the winter the males are a very dull yellow, much like the females year round. A reminder that spring is coming is when the males drop those dull feathers and replace them with their brilliant summer yellow ones!
